Ecology

Ecology is the study of the relationships of organisms to their environment and to other organisms. Even a distinct discipline of biology such as ecology can be broken down into many subdisciplines such as community ecology, population ecology, avian population ecology, etc.

An animal’s habitat includes both the living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) characteristics of the environment in which it lives. Abiotic characteristics include light, moisture, physical structure, temperature, etc. For different abiotic factors, animals have a tolerance range within which they may be able to survive. The optimum range for a particular factor is the values of that factor at which the animal will be the most successful. Each species needs several factors to be within the tolerance range to be able to survive, and if one factor is not present in sufficient amounts, it becomes a limiting factor that prevents that species from being able to survive in that environment.

In order to survive, animals must obtain energy. Nearly all animals (with the exception of a few protists) must obtain all of their energy from other sources (from things they ingest), and are said to be heterotrophic. Organisms that are capable of producing their own energy (usually from photosynthesis) are autotrophic. A description of the total energy intake of an animal and the ways that energy is used or lost is called an energy budget.

A large part of many animals’ energy budget is used in regulating body temperature. Temperature affects an animal’s metabolism (speed of chemical reactions in its cells) and the overall activity level. Heat can be lost to the environment from radiation, through convection to the air and through evaporation. Heat is gained from solar radiation, radiation from objects in the environment and through metabolic heat production. Animals may use several different techniques to reduce heat loss or to reduce metabolic activity to conserve energy.

Torpor is a relatively short period of decreased metabolism and lowered body temperature that allows animals with high metabolic rates to survive periods when they are not feeding.

Hibernation is a much longer period of decreased metabolism and lowered body temperatures that may last for several weeks or even months. True hibernation occurs in small mammals (bats, rodents, etc.), and the animal’s body temperature may decrease to 20° C, and thermoregulation continues around this new point.

Winter sleep occurs in some larger animals (such as bears) where the body temperatures drop but not by large amounts, and the animal can become active very quickly.

Aestivation is a period of inactivity in animals that must keep from becoming too dry. Most animals that aestivate enter a burrow during dry periods, and some even produce a protective “cocoon” to prevent dessication (drying). This practice is relatively common in amphibians, reptiles and many invertebrates.

3. Symbols

Pedometer

Hedge

Water/moat- new life

Chooses weather or not to stay or go to check out the other side of the hedge water/moat new life baptism so this could be talking about a guys conversion

QUESTIONS

What do you think is important to the people on the other side of the hedge?

Whatever they want to do at the time

People working but happily working, someone pulling people out of moat

Which side do you think is better?

The other side of the hedge, however the people of the age who read this may have thought differently. Fact that the other side of hedge doesn’t go any where people can look at it more like a cult or something on those lines (end scene races by not sure what happened) towards end he’s still not convert and is longing for the road as apposed to the other side of the hedge

Without struggle but w/o victory so yes it has no struggles it has no victory

Really difficult for a modern reader or writer to embrace the other side of the hedge

The weak choice to stay on the other side of the hedge and the strong choice to go to the road.

Does the main character die in the end?

Unreliable narrator

Conversion moment

Which side of the hedge the writer thinks is better

Anything worth having is worth working for so I’ll work for good grades and a degree and on top of everything else I need to figure out what I want to do with my life!!!!!! Major stress on that one I have no idea everything sounds fun or appealing and I would be good at most things but I just really do not know I have always thought that this life is so temporary that it does not matter what I do because life is too short but I want to do something I love but then the question becomes WHAT DO I LOVE??? I love God of course but what else? What can I make a career out of?

“love is fragile. And we’re not always the best care-takers.”

Awesome quote from a great movie and book. The last song!!! And how true it is love is fragile and sensitive and kind and so many things (hit first Corinthians 13 up) love means putting someone else needs above your own. But as humans we are selfish and we are not the best car-takers of it. We often fail at love we often falter we many times choose to put our selves first out of selfish desires and even though we may realize it later we still may have broken someones heart someones love along the way. (I am so scattered right now my thoughts are going one hundred miles an hour so I am not really sure if this is making sense but it is all good we shall see later) love is hard to understand there is no black and white with love though many people try and make it that way there is a huge gray area for we love more than one person usually for instance if you have 2 kids and a husband you love them both but things can become complicated at points. you can love someone but love god more so if they cause your to faulter with your relationship with god you let them go it hurts and it would prob. hurt them as well but your love for god should be more than your love of man your love of any earthly thing anything at all

Matthew 8:12 says, “ but the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Have you ever seen those old western movies where someone is shot and they’re like “oh no we have to pull the bullet out of there!”? They give them a stick or a rag to bite on while they pull out the bullet, then you see the person who was shot, tears streaming down his face, teeth grating on whatever is in his mouth, give out a sound that tells you, “man that guy is hurtin’!” Then once the bullet is out, he gives out gasping sighs of relief, the camera fades to black, and the when the next scene starts, it’s like nothing ever happened to him. Well in hell, it’s not like that. It’s not just a temporary suffering. Revelation 20:10 tells us that it’s an eternal torment that never stops. It’s day and night… 24/7… 365… forever. You won’t really be able to measure time like that, but you get the idea that it’s nothing but eternal pain, suffering, and torture. So now we see this aspect of extreme physical pain you have to endure, but there’s an entire mental side of it too. See… I don’t think that that weeping is just because of the physical pain.

When we were kids, we all fell off our bikes at some point and just started balling our eyes out. Those tears we cried weren’t just because of the pain was it? No, it was because we wanted our mommy or our daddy. We wanted someone to come scoop us up and carry us home. We often describe heaven as the home of the soul. If we go to hell, our soul is not at home and we have wasted the entire purpose of our souls being created in the first place. Mark 9:47 says, “And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of heaven with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire.” Ok, stick with me here, it’ll make sense in a minute. In this verse, the original Hebrew word for hell or hell fire was Gehenna. This word originates from a place called the Valley of Hinnon. This was a small valley outside the city of Jerusalem that was, at one time, a place to sacrifice babies by fire to the pagan god Molech. Later it was turned into a place where they threw all of their trash and carcasses from animals and dead criminals. It was basically a giant trash heap that was constantly being burned by fire. Now we can tie this all together. See, if we’re in hell, then not only are we not home where we are supposed to be, we’re stuck in this giant, smelly trash heap. And why? Because of insignificant, stupid things we did on this earth. In this verse, Jesus is basically telling us, “So what if you have to make sacrifices? It’s better for you to give up this small thing in your life and come to heaven and be with me, because if not, you will be stuck in a giant trash heap forever.”

Jesus made it a point to talk about hell quite a few times throughout His ministry. He obviously wanted to warn us about what hell is like and help us to avoid it. Now I’m not saying that not going to hell should be our main motivation to be Christians. It should always be our love of God that pushes us through life, but next time you’re about to say something you’re not supposed to, go to this party you know you shouldn’t go to, or look at something you know you shouldn’t look at… ask yourself… “Is it worth it? … Is it worth the eternal suffering I may have to endure? … Is it worth throwing away the purpose of my soul that Jesus died for?” Knowing what it will be like, I think we will find that the answer is no.

So often we think ”man I can’t wait to get to heaven. It’s going to be awesome!” But we rarely think about the other end of the spectrum… Statistics show that 88% of Americans believe in God and 86% believe in heaven. But only 70% of Americans believe in Hell. See we don’t even like to think about it, much less TALK about it. But it’s an aspect of our Christian lives that is so important to our full understanding of our salvation. Jesus came to this earth to die for us so that we could live in heaven with Him, but he also did it so that we would not have to spend an eternity in Hell. So for the next few minutes, I want to talk about what hell is really like and what God wants us to know about it so that we can understand our salvation from all angles.

Turn with me to Revelation 21:8. *read verse* The most common description of hell throughout the Bible is that it’s a lake of fire. If you jump into a lake here on earth, you get soaked. You are completely surrounded on all sides by water. In hell, it’s not like your just standing by a few campfires; you’re completely engulfed in flames, surrounded by people who, on earth, might have been considered the worst of the worst…the murderers… the adulterers… the non-believers (although there are no atheists in hell. Thank you Blake Tucker for that quote. Once they get there, I’m pretty sure they will know God exists) And it’s not just that. Psalm 11:6 describes a tempest of fire and brimstone raining down on you. I don’t know if you have ever been on a lake or the ocean during a storm, but it’s scary. Waves crashing, boat rocking… it’s no fun at all to be stuck in, so I can’t even imagine what it would be like with fire, but God gives us a little insight into what it’s like.

God’s Mighty Power

When I heard that this was my topic I immediately thought of the Apostle Paul. In Acts chapter 22 you hear Saul tell his story

The first thing that came to my mind was Saul. Saul was a man who persecuted the church who persecuted Christians. (Acts 22) you get to hear about Saul’s live turning around you can see where God decided to work through him. Acts 22:6-8 can you imagine how crazy that would be to just hear a voice out of nowhere. I know that I couldn’t acts 9- so not only is this a crazy experience but everyone around him is just like who’s this crazy dude. As you continue on you see Saul was told to arise and go into Damascus, and there you will be told and things which are appointed for you to do.

Do a review of acts 22

Imagine how hard that was for Paul to turn around from persecuting God to following him. That is a big lifestyle change he had to leave everything behind. Everything! But God’s mighty power can turn anyone’s life around

David was a man who committed adultery with Bathsheba. But when confronted he owned what he did he didn’t try to blame it on anyone else he could have easily said oh well she shouldn’t have been bathing in the open or my servants shouldn’t have brought her to me but in 2 Samuel 12:13 is says

“So David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die.”

But even with all this David was a man after God’s own heart Acts 13:22 says

“I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.”

How awesome is that to be known for all eternity as a man after God’s own heart!

Although on a down side when we did get stuck we had water past the doors so those of us in the truck could not get out and we had to keep our foot on the gas to make sure water did not get in the engine. As we waited for Charlie to bail us out AGAIN we realized water was filling the floor board slowly…umm…problem haha but luckily Charlie got there quickly and no damage was done. We then proceeded to the car wash and then began to have a mud fight! Talk about a fun night! Mudding Mud fight getting stuck! And we just barely made it back for curfew! So Yesterday was an awesome day in my book!!! =)

We went witnessed and participated in making music, went mudding, talk to the police, and so many other things. But on this blog I want As me and my friend Morgan pulled into the Wal-Mart parking lot we were dancing, giggling, and just having a great time! She parked her car and as were walking in we were the witnesses of an accident. That is just our luck! We were in a hurry and end up being witnesses, go figure. As we walk towards the scene, the truck that had backed into and straight up taken out this little black car, the guy just drives off! Slowly looking around the guy just pulls out of the parking lot and just drives off!!! WHO DOES THAT!!!!???? I mean really who on earth feels the need to run and just leave that kind of damage for someone to find? I mean talk about a crap day, walk out of Wal-Mart minding your own business BAM my car has been hit and just left for me to find and pick up the pieces to! LAME! Back to the point. As we watched him drive off I grabbed my phone called 911 as Morgan was talking to another car who also witnessed the accident went to go get the trucks license plate number! We talked to the police and the Wal-Mart security finally just leaving the shopping we needed to do at Wal-Mart. As we headed inside, I thanked God for everyone being ok, fellow Christians in the world, and good friends who always seem to make you laugh even in tragedy. (even if this wasn’t really a tragedy ;)

Xi Chi Delta (the club that I am in) which is a club made up of almost all freshman at this point is not at a loss but more of a state of confusion since the majority of us have no idea what is going on and about half of us who have never done a making music show have not even seen one yet! I am included in this category! Lol This makes me laugh a bit. I have done lots of singing and chorus type things so I have more experience than most but not by much. The lights have been dimed and everyone is cheering and yelling I am so excited to here the hosts and hostess. I love listening to people singing solos beautiful!!!! =) The singers have done incredible so far but the excitement is still bubbling inside everyone as we wait to see weather or not it is as great as we expected but thus far no disappointments!!! Everyone is talking about how their families are coming and how they are so excited and what not. But the room is definitely filled with laughter which is always a good sound to my ears. And now the moment we have all be waiting for the first show is up XBX!!! I can not wait the excitement is booming in the room with the anticipation of the casts first moves!!!! Welp I’m all to watch making music!!!!

1. Preaching at Iconium (vs. 1-7)

2. Worshipped, then stoned at Lystra (vs. 8-20)

3. The return from Derbe to Antioch (vs. 21-28)

The word believe or believed is used in two ways

· 1. Is called a synecdoche

· 2. Is believe stands for one of the steps

1. Preaching at Iconium (vs. 1-7)

a. They “spoke in such a manner” that a great multitude believed (vs. 1)

b. The Lord “was bearing witness to the word” (vs. 3) Compare with Mark 16:20; Heb. 2:1-4)

2. Worshipped, then stoned at Lystra (vs. 8-20)

a. Paul healed a lame man (vs. 8-10)

b. People think Paul and Barnabus are gods in man form (vs. 11-13)

                                              i. Barnabus was called Zeus, king of the Gods

ii. Paul was called Hermes, messenger of the gods

iii. The priests of Zeus’ temple would have worshipped Paul and Barnabus (vs. 13)

c. Paul argues from nature that men should serve the true God (vs. 14-17)

d. People very fickle; turn from desire to worship to determination to destroy (vs. 19-20)

I think i kind of like taking notes on tumblr. It makes me have to pay attention more b/c it is harder for me to make them look like normal notes on here than in Word so it is more of a challenge and i have to pay attention or i’ll miss something and not know what the teacher said and it makes me have to read the book we have to go along with the lesson which i usually do not do lol.

although i did not have time to post these during class so i copied it into word and now the format looks weird i’ll have to figure that out later ???

German missal did so much damage on the ship only 6 life boats could be launched 1200 drowned

128 Americans drowned

June 1914 American war

Men in army had no reason to anticipate the hell (trouble) ahead

1914 city full of soldiers (German civilian)

boys out of high school and college were sent to from line and were killed in 10’s of thousand each week

movies became an American obsession and that’s how we found out about the war in Germany and it still seemed like a (fanatizy unreal made it seem better than it really was)

war made good business for American the economy was in a boom 6 to 7 dollars a week to a 100 dollars a week

war cut off immigration which made a shortage in labor

amerians looked to the african Americans for workers

60 countries involved in the war

front line never moved more than a mile or 2 in either direction

americans came to conclusion to blast enemy out of there direction

making the industrialization of war

(destroyed land making it look sad and decreped and no trees just mud and dirt

impossible to get dead buried and there were so many on both sides

to contribute to the stale mate the machine gun had been perfected so one person could run one and the tank

and Germans invented poison gas (deadly no one had seen it before scared Canadian troupes hit by it )

the first war had become not a war but a contest on the technology that your country could create

20,000 killed 40,000 wounded

some were crying some visably shaken and when the whistle blew they had to climb over and run for the german think

1 million men were at the cost

every country involved in the war there were problems at home

russian ppl were starving and it’s army was on the verge of defeat

revolution in Russia

Lenin leads a revolt against the czar’s palce

Germany urges mexico to invade america

April 2 1917 wodrow wilsion asked for declaration for war he hoped it would be the war to end all wars

Germany tries to capture paris

Germans put everything into the last desperate effort and when it was over they were spent and when it was over the war shifted from war to peace

11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month November 1918 germans formally surrendered

American veterans began to come home and having making the world a safer place the economy boom began to come to a halt

While people were laying people off veterans came home looking for jobs that were no longer available

Winter 1918 Europe was a disaster

Even the victors france and… were enraged by the disaster much disaster from the war

In all 9 million men had died

Every family had lost someone

Oh I think I like this topic better! I hope it is ok if change haha oh well I shall see when we get back from spring break!!! Lets see divorce and what to argue…maybe I could go along the same route at the eating disorders and go with the effect America has on divorces and if our American culture has a good or bad effect on divorce I’m going with bad because we have one of the highest divorce rates if not eh highest I can not quite remember but there is something I could look up and use as a source laugh out loud. Well I think I will pick between these two topics both of which I feel like I could write a lot on and have a good paper and I feel I would have lots of things I could look up for sources. And that is a good feeling.

As soon as I found out Xi Chi Delta was going on a mission trip to an orphanage I knew I had to go!! After the experience i had in China this summer I knew there was no place I would rather be for spring break!!! There is just something about children they are a wonderful blessing from God and are totally innocent and honest! For instance if you ask a child something then they will tell you the honest truth…how do I look in this dress…? Eww…what are you wearing?…they will be totally honest with you something the world seems to lack today. But even besides the honesty children have there is something about orphans that just breaks and reshapes my heart. You know they have been through so much and have had such hard lives, lives we could never truly understand unless you your self have been an orphan but they mend and reshape my heart with how openly they love and how no matter how hard things may be for them they are so happy not just sort of happy truly happy! For instance American children can be so spoiled and whinny and just a bit rotten…not all but quite I few ( I have babysit some kids and it just astonishes me sometimes how they can act) but when I was in china with the children the orphans they were so happy and they hardly had anything. They don’t have a lot of toys hardly any they have 2 changes of cloths one pair of shoes and they do not have parents. And they ones who do have parents, their parents can not afford to keep them (you see if you have more than one kid in china then you have to pay a tax on them) so many families can only afford to have one kid and if they have more they must pick which one they will keep and which one will go to the orphanage. This is sad they are split from family! They do have a huge family of all the other orphans but you can see why this would break my heart! But something they do get several of the orphanages there are owned by a Christian company and b/c they are privately owned they get to teach the bible and that’s ok b/c it is privately owned so in a way these orphans have a treasure much greater than most of the people in China! A treasure that some may never grow to know or love like many of these children will!

As always every time I get a get a guy friend he ends up liking me! Every time…sometimes people are like oh that’s sweet but I want to be like no no it is not! It is tiring and I know I should be flattered but when you just see someone as a friend it is awkward and when you have lost close to fifteen friends or so because of it, it gets old and it gets old fast…i guess it just gets frustrating when someone likes you and you do not feel the same…yet the guy I would want to go out with has no clue I like him and he would not ask me out just a close friend who you see as just a friend….which just equals awkward moment haha but I guess I get used to those…oh well I just think I had to vent about it…I guess after so many times of this happening maybe it is something that I am doing…but I am not really sure what I am dong wrong…? I make it clear that I just feel like a friend I try and make sure I do not flirt…even though my personality is naturally flirty…I just wish that I could keep a guy as just a friend I grew up with lots of guys I have 2 brothers and 3 more boys I grew up with who I call my brothers I just enjoy being around guys more…generally speaking…they whine less and want to do more out doorsy things like rock climbing…not always but for the most part…oh well I vented some of this frustration out maybe one day everything will fall into place who knows…grr…

Penguins are always dressed up I mean black white and looks like a tux. Winners!!! =)

Chocolate may not solve the world’s problems but it does make people in the world way happier.

Wrestling best sport ever!

Rock climbing best outdoors sport ever!

College really not all that different from high school just more freedom

Growing up stinks when you realize how much responsibility you have with bills and everything along those lines

(^ everyone may say it but turns out to be really true)

dressing nice when having a bad day does automatically make it a better day

being in a good mind set and saying you will have a good day most definitely does make the day better.

Test in bible this Tuesday! Crazy over the first 12 chapters hmm…not sure how I feel about that

Tea equals a cup of happiness in my day!

One on one time with friends makes you a lot closer than if you spend all your time in big groups!

The really close friends you make in college last a lifetime

Studying weeks a head of time makes the test way easier than if you waited

Bible equals most important book you will ever read.

Learning other languages will help you throughout your life

The moment is now so do not wait for tomorrow

Time can not be saved

A picture can capture a moment in time and preserve it for a lifetime

Family should always come first

Hmm…and idk just random thoughts of the day I guess.

I am so excited she is marrying an amazing person who completes here and you can see the love in their relationship they are just truly amazing together. Yet at the same time it is quite scary. I mean this girl is my age I mean we are only months apart and she is getting married and me I have not even given marriage much thought at all. I am always so busy I can not even imagine having to pick out who I want to spend the rest of my life with right now. I have no idea what I want from life what I want to do what I want in any shape or form (well despite being a Christian and getting to heaven and bringing as many people with me as possible.) but let alone what someone else wants and how to get that accomplished. In short it was a huge wake up call of hello yes I should figure out what I want haha I mean I do not even know what I want to major in! I mean yes I am a freshman and I have time but what if I do not figure it out! Oh man so much pressure. Basically Amber taking the leap and getting married made me have to sit down and think about my life and try and figure things out. I mean I know it does not happen over night (you figuring things out that is) but it does mean I do need to spend some time figuring it out I mean I hardly think about it at all, I have never been one for plans let alone one to stick to them. But just some thoughts.

It just quiets the world around you so that you can hear the beauty of God’s voice or the wrath haha depending how you want to look at it. But the pitter patter of the rain hitting the windows and the roof is a lullaby just sending me to sleep. I was never afraid of thunderstorms like most kids when they were little more like a curious fascination for them. I always felt like the eye of the hurricane in a storm even though everyone else could be freaking out and there could be total chaos around me and I was always calm staring out the window waiting for the next stream of lightening to light up the dark cloudy sky. Last night as I went to sleep late in the evening I slept like a bear in hibernation only to be awaken by my ever so rude alarm clock reminding me of the beginning of the day and sending me into a whirling hurry to get ready for class as I slept through it for the first 20 minutes. Even though I was running late (which usually would drive me insane!) I calmly got ready and soaked up the sleep I had just enjoyed. Even though I found myself up studying until around 3 in the morning I still felt as if I had gotten some of the best sleep I have gotten all semester. After the sleep I got last night nothing could rain on my parade today. =)
